Dark underarms are a huge problem and look unsightly especially when wearing a sleeveless top. At times dark underarms come with sweating, odours and itching. These make one look unkempt and dirty, no matter how clean you actually are. These and more reasons make it important to know the causes of dark underarms so as to change habits that result to it.
Friction due to wearing tight clothing can lead to dark underarms so we should always try to wear something fitted appropriately. In addition,we should always wear cotton or any other organic fabrics that will allow the skin to breathe.

Avoid heavy use of antiperspirants or deodorants that contain chemicals alcohol or strong fragrances.
If you sweat heavily, you can use anti-fungal talc's and powders.
Also give alum powder a try.
Shaving of the armpit also makes it darker
Avoid shaving,instead, wax underarms (yikes)

A good cleansing regimen is also important to Slough dead cells and so is a good wash or scrubbing while having a bath. Dead cells give the armpits a dull and dark appearance.
These above are crucial steps to avoid underarms from becoming dark but if you already have dark inderarms, there are quite a number of things that can be done.

Lemon
lemons are natural bleachers and tend to lighten areas which they are used.
Rub armpits with lemon slices at least once daily for good effect.
Baking soda also has amazing properties in lightening up dark underarms.
Immediately after a bath, dab some baking soda on the armpits.
Vitamin E oil can also be rubbed on a timely basis.
Rubbing coconut oil also helps lighten dark armpits.
Concoctions made with coconut oil, baking soda, and lemon are always effective too.

A mixture of lime and cucumber is also helpful. Mix a teaspoon of lime juice with a teaspoon of cucumber juice and add a pinch of turmeric powder. Mix to firm a paste and apply on the armpits for 20 minutes then rinse off with warm water.

If none of these methods work which I strongly doubt, it would be best to talk to your dermatologist about chemical peels such as salicylic acid peels or prescription hydroquinone.
